Crystal skulls acquired stories of ancient temples, Atlantis and extraterrestrial origins, but their histories cannot be established by those stories alone. Museum researchers compared microscopic tool marks with securely excavated carvings, traced dealer and auction records, and tested individual objects. The results support later manufacture for the examined specimens. A surviving Hewlett-Packard newsletter also separates identifying quartz from proving antiquity, while a small-skull study limits blanket claims.
