Viking Orbiter frame 035A72 (25 July 1976) made a Cydonia mesa look humanoid under low-resolution lighting. Official Viking/NASA captions called the head a shadow illusion; Mars Global Surveyor and HiRISE later resolved an eroded landform. The Archive tension is pareidolia versus artificial-monument folklore—not a documented cover-up of a statue.

Declassified documents show the military gave a psychic spy a set of coordinates on Mars and a timestamp of 1 million years BCE. The psychic accurately described a dying planet, giant pyramids, and a race of tall, desperate beings trying to survive a planetary disaster.
