The Willowbrook Hepatitis Experiments
Willowbrook State School sat on Staten Island as a warehouse for children with intellectual disabilities. Inside it, beginning in the 1950s, medical researchers ran hepatitis studies that included deliberate infection of newly admitted children. The justification offered then: hepatitis was already endemic in the institution, so controlled exposure plus gamma globulin trials might yield science and, supposedly, protection.
