STANCIB and the London SIGINT Board signed the British–U.S. Communications Intelligence Agreement on 5 March 1946. Appendices structured COMINT security and analytic coordination; Canada, Australia, and New Zealand entered Second-Party arrangements forming Five Eyes lineage. NSA and GCHQ avowed and released the 1940–1956 file family in June 2010; UK HW 80 holds related records. Documented/L1: agreement and lineage without invented modern take lists.
On 8 June 1967 Israeli aircraft and torpedo boats attacked the SIGINT ship USS *Liberty*, killing thirty-four Americans. NSA’s FOIA historical releases of helicopter–tower audio/transcripts, a 13 June 1967 CIA memorandum in FRUS, and the Agency’s *Attack on a SIGINT Collector* history document the intercept record while leaving deliberate-versus-mistake—and any U.S. cover claim—outside settled fact.
KGB archivist Vasiliy Mitrokhin's notes are deposited at Churchill Archives Centre as redacted/edited Russian typescripts (original notebooks closed). ISC Cm 4764 and Hansard document UK handling and publication process. Documented provenance and oversight—not blank-check proof of every published book claim.
From August 1945 to May 1975, NSA received copies of most international telegrams via RCA, ITT, and Western Union International. Church Committee Book III called it the largest governmental interception program affecting Americans.
NSA's Trailblazer modernization drew internal criticism while ThinThread offered cheaper analysis with stronger privacy filters; IG reports and whistleblower cases document the clash.
Ana Belén Montes, a senior Defense Intelligence Agency Cuba analyst, pleaded guilty on 19 March 2002 to conspiracy to commit espionage and was sentenced on 16 October 2002 to 300 months under a cooperation agreement. FBI case narrative, the September 2001 complaint affidavit, and the sentencing transcript document the plea spine. Living-person care: court verbs only.
On 4 January 1975 President Gerald R. Ford signed Executive Order 11828 and created the Commission on CIA Activities Within the United States. Vice President Nelson A. Rockefeller chaired it. The assignment was blunt: determine whether any domestic CIA activities exceeded the Agency’s statutory authority and recommend remedies. In June 1975 the Commission submitted its final report.
Canyon (NRO/USAF Program 827 / Mission 7500) flew near-geosynchronous COMINT satellites from 1968–1977. NRO’s declassified SIGINT Satellite Story, FOIA doors, and open launch tables document the first dedicated U.S. space COMINT generation while acknowledging remaining GEO redactions.
After 9/11, a presidential Authorization covered NSA activities under the STELLARWIND cover term (publicly framed as the Terrorist Surveillance Program; IG language: President's Surveillance Program). The July 2009 five-agency IG report mandated by FAA Title III—and FOIA-declassified volumes through 2015–16—document OLC scaffolding, DoJ/FISC crisis, and years outside ordinary FISA practice.
AT&T technician Mark Klein revealed a NSA-linked secret room at a San Francisco switching center that split fiber traffic for surveillance; EFF litigation and Klein's declaration created a rare on-the-record physical description of dragnet infrastructure.
Crypto AG sold cipher machines worldwide under a neutral Swiss commercial reputation. NS Archive FOIA (Friedman; Condor cables), Swiss GPDel inspection (Nov 2020), and Federal Council reply document CIA–BND secret ownership (Minerva / Thesaurus→Rubicon) and Swiss intelligence knowledge from 1993—acknowledgment trail over press-only spine.
June–July 1970: Tom Charles Huston's extreme domestic-intelligence options were presidentially approved then formally revoked within days. Church Committee Vol. 2 / Vol. 4 exhibits and Book II document origin, disposition, and the harder tension—techniques the Plan contemplated were already running or continued by other channels.
FBI Operation Ghost Stories ended with June 2010 arrests of ten Russian illegals and SDNY complaints charging conspiracy to act as unregistered agents of the Russian Federation. Guilty pleas on 8 July 2010 and a negotiated exchange closed the case; FBI FOIA releases later published surveillance texture without rewriting the charging theory.
On 23 January 1968, North Korea seized USS Pueblo (AGER-2). One sailor died; 82 crew were held until 23 December 1968. Failed emergency destruction left crypto gear, keying material, and thousands of intelligence messages compromised.
FBI SSA Robert Philip Hanssen spied for KGB/SVR across three periods (1979–81, 1985–91, 1999–2001) until arrest 18 Feb 2001. Affidavit, guilty plea, life sentence, and DoJ OIG 2003/2007 performance reviews document compromised sources/programs and systemic Bureau security failures—convicted espionage case, not folklore.
In 1973, DCI James Schlesinger ordered CIA to compile potentially illegal activities. The Family Jewels memo dump—later partially released—catalogued assassination plots, domestic surveillance, mail opening, and other abuses that fed Rockefeller and Church revelations.
CIA DO officer Aldrich Hazen Ames spied for KGB/SVR from 1985 until arrest 21 Feb 1994. SSCI staff assessment (Nov 1994), DoJ OIG unclassified summary (Apr 1997), and FBI/CIA case history document catastrophic source losses and years of CIA–FBI coordination failure—convicted espionage case, not folklore.
SOSUS was the U.S. Navy’s Cold War passive undersea sound-surveillance grid—Caesar/NAVFAC cover, LOFAR analysis, later IUSS with SURTASS. Navy/IUSS community histories and 1991 mission declassification document the program without inventing classified take lists.
The BYEMAN Control System was the DCI compartment that protected National Reconnaissance Office satellite design and operations details. CIA Reading Room access-approval packets, 1992 IG and 1993 restructure FOIA releases, and 2005 retirement guidance document a handling regime—not folklore invisibility—ending in transition to TALENT-KEYHOLE.
On 31 July 2013 *The Guardian* published NSA training slides for XKEYSCORE. The deck described a Digital Network Intelligence tool for querying buffered foreign internet traffic—emails, browsing metadata, selectors—while NSA’s 30 July 2013 statement and later PCLOB oversight bound the public record.
Operation Holystone denotes Cold War U.S. Navy submarine special intelligence collection against Soviet naval targets—ELINT/SIGINT and acoustic signatures—as described in FAS and Congressional Record open summaries. Seymour Hersh’s May 1975 reporting forced public debate; Ford White House memos hosted by PBS FRONTLINE show Cheney option papers and Attorney General Levi’s advice against prosecuting the leak lest the government confirm the program in court. The Archive documents existence and disclosure politics and refuses invented complete take/hull lists.
Cambridge Analytica harvested Facebook profile data via a quiz app and used psychographic targeting in political campaigns; UK and U.S. investigations, whistleblowers, and corporate collapse left a dense public record.
In July 2000 the FBI disclosed Carnivore (DCS1000), a packet-sniffer for court-ordered internet wiretaps; later reporting described DCSNet as a broader carrier-linked collection suite.
On the night of 5–6 September 2007 an airstrike destroyed a remote facility in eastern Syria’s Dair Alzour region—the site open sources call Al-Kibar. For months afterward, public silence held. On 24 April 2008 the White House Press Secretary stated that Syria had been building a covert plutonium-capable reactor with North Korean assistance, that the reactor was not intended for peaceful…
